Born in the early 1980s out of the ashes of U.K. post-punk pioneers Joy Division, New Order became one of the first electro-pop bands to find mainstream success in the US. Their single "Blue Monday" was a landmark in dance music, and subsequent recordings achieved a perfect balance between technology and pop songcraft. Their 1989 album, TECHNIQUE, embraced the Balearic House sounds of Ibiza--where they recorded much of the album--as well as Acid House. The following year New Order record the official song for the England World Cup campaign, the single "Word In Motion" topped the UK charts and remains possibly the only example of a good World Cup song! Leader Bernard Sumner also moonlighted with Johnny Marr as Electronic, while sporadically reconvening the famed quartet for new recordings--2001s GET READY and 2007s WAITING FOR THE SIRENS CALL--and world tours.
