About Nada Surf

In the 1990s, this three-man indie-rock crew from New York City scored a deal with Elektra Records and its debut HIGH/LOW yielded a novelty hit in 1996's outdated-manners-guide-quoting "Popular." Following a dispute with its label, the band's second album, THE PROXIMITY EFFECT, was buried for many years. The group seemed resigned to one-hit wonder status; however, in the early 2000s, Nada Surf achieved one of the most unexpected of resurrections. The band's fiery, guitar-driven power pop, led by the slightly off-kilter vocals of Matthew Caws, finally found a home at then-rising indie Barsuk Records, who released a series of critically celebrated albums throughout the decade.
