You’d think being influential electro DJs and promoting a club night which has been host to dance mastodons Justice, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) and Simian Mobile Disco - to name but three - would be enough for The Filthy Dukes. Obviously not, the Dukes added a Duke and started a band, borrowing friends from The Maccabees, Late Of The Pier, Tommy Sparks and Secret Machines along the way for their debut long player, Nonsense in the Dark - an album that more than stands up to releases from their electro peers. We spoke to Olly Dixon from the band about it all.
Everybody is loving Wild Beasts and their new album, Two Dancers, and we are no exception - it's an outstanding record. We caught up with them to discuss it and the lead track, ‘Hooting and Howling’. Click the photo to get the video started.
Plus, be sure to check out the playlist they've made for us and why they chose each song
Unless you've been hiding in a soundproof room these last few months you've probably heard of La Roux as they're currently occupying an enviable position of being somewhere between the next big thing and the current big thing. We recently caught up with Elly from the band and asked her all about her self titled debut album, her love of the 80s, and lots more. Here's what she told us.
We popped round to the Cooking Vinyl offices to wag chins with the singer and lyricist of Art Brut; to find out about their 3rd album, Art Brut vs. Satan and lead track 'Alcoholics Unanimous', amongst other things. And what a nice man Eddie is. Despite being massive in the US, Germany and France, with a loyal cult following (call them the cognoscenti!) in the UK - which includes the majority of music critics - he remains as humble and good humoured as hell. Elvis’s debut, Ash Wednesday, is a fond favourite round these parts. We quizzed the critically acclaimed folk-rocker - and son of Anthony Perkins - to find out more about what makes him tick and his new album, Elvis Perkins in Dearland.
The good folk of Psapp kindly let us into their headquarters to discuss all manner of things, including their brand new album The Camel’s Back (£5 this week), forthcoming single The Monsters Song and why TV shows like C.S.I. and Grey's Anatomy so often turn to them for a tune or two. Eugene McGuinness's new album is a rewarding and enjoyable listen – oh yes. But how it intrigues! So we satisfied our curiosity by firing a few carefully aimed questions at the unique DIY pop troubadour himself. Read the interview.
We sat down for a good old natter with the electronic music master and learnt a heck of a lot about him and his lush, ambient soundscapes; so thank goodness we are able to impart our findings to you with this handy video. Give it a click. And give his track Stars a whirl.
